Family Tree Maker V 6 - Help
« on: Sunday 20 May 07 13:13 BST (UK) »
Hi

I've one file in Family Tree Maker that contains all the records from my Grandmother's and Grandfather's trees and I would like to create a separate file of my Grandfather's side to send to someone.  Does anyone know if  there a way of extracting an individual and all their decendants and then exporting them into a new file?

V6?  That sounds like a very old version of FTM, is it pre-2000?
I don't think you can with the old version.

What you could do is export a GEDCOM out of FTM into a free program that can.  I think PAF can let you create a selective GEDCOM but you may have to do this manually one individual at a time.

Hi Caz,

Mine's version 11, but I think you could still do this in v6 - if not, click on your help? box and look up 'copying/exporting groups of individuals'

This is how mine works:
Select the individual, create a descendant tree or outline descendant tree for him by clicking on one of the boxes along the top of the page, then click on 'File' then 'Copy/Export Individuals', a 'save' box should appear, make a new name for the file and save as 'Family Tree Maker'.  Then you can open that file as a new family file.  Or save it as a 'gedcom' and you can then send the gedcom off to someone by email.

Hope that helps,
Barbara

Hmm, maybe I got the version no. wrong as I only bought it at the end of 2006.

I will try what you both suggest, many thanks for responding, very much appreciated.  ;)

Version 6.0 was released around 2000/2001 when it was owned by Broderbund.

Then the company changed hands and was acquired by Ancestry.com who are in turn owned by myfamily.com so the version numbering changed.  Generally speaking it is best to refer to the year nowadays e.g. FTM-2005 or FTM-2006.
I think FTM-2005 is version 12.0.  They seem to release a new version every year.  I assume that by V6 you probably mean FTM-2006 which is probably Version 13.

As Ecneps mentioned you go up the tree to to the first ancestor and click on Reports and select Outline Descendant and run the report.  You then click on File and then Export File.  You then have 2 choices:
Entire File ....
Copy/Export Individuals in Outline Descendant Tree ....

Select the 2nd option.
