Hello again,
I posted the photo below on the Armed Forces board (
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=233397)to ask if anyone could identify the uniform, which they have done with relative certainty, as belonging to one of the Hussar regiments.
They thought it would be a good idea to see if any of you gallant photo restorers would like to have a go at colouring it (I think it needs some de-spotting and maybe a bit of sharpening too).
Several posters there have given the following clues:
Blue uniforms with yellow trim. The loops on chest are yellow but show black due to film at this time. Trousers blue with double yellow stripes.
The white pouch belt across his chest is a white-buff leather, it would be cleaned using white pipe clay, so it is 'white' in colour.
buttons brass, all trim yellow including cuffs, round collar and tunic edges etc . Some Hussars had coloured collars ie ; 3rd had a red collar and the 13th a white one but this looks like the more common blue so i should stick to that in this case.
the "Wrist Lyre" would normally be white metal, and thus silver in colour
I guess the blue of the uniform would be a similar shade to in this drawing:
