the Elizabeth MARTIN tug-o'war
« on: Monday 21 May 07 01:15 BST (UK) »
We are two "claiming" the same Elizabeth Martin!

The information that I have is that the parents of Elizabeth MARTIN who married John HARDING/HEARDING the 27th Sep 1813 at Buckland Brewer were John MARTIN and Anne LEACH.

Now there there has been a shadow   cast!

Might they instead be the parents of Elizabeth MARTIN who married William PARR the 5th October 1816 ?

Both these marriages can be found in the same IGI batch:  M050041 but they aren't the same person as Elizabeth and John Harding were still having children past 1816.

Does anyone have access to the marriage records of Buckland Brewer around that time and do they include the fathers' names? Witness names could also help.

Much thanks for any assistance!

Marriage entries in the parish registers pre 1837 did not have a space for the fathers name or occupations I am afraid.
They only record the bride and grooms name, plus marital state and the usual 'of age' and 'of this parish'.

I can have a look at the register for you next time I go to the Record Office but I can't see how it would help.

Kind Regards

Hmm. That does make it tough. :-\

I'm wondering what one would do then, to determine who the parents of the bride were; As to her age, could a death certificate be of any more help - at least with respect to the birth date of the individual? Mind you, I don't even know when or where Elizabeth Harding (nee Martin) actually died - and besides finding a baptismal dates is not the same as a birth date.

And so, thank you for your kind offer but as I have the exact date of their marriage, and you say there isn't the additional info to be had in the records, looking it up probably won't advance the cause!

It was my aunt who did the initial research through her Mormon church but couldn't continue. The notes that I have were that Elizabeth Martin was of East Putford (at marriage I think, but was she born there???) and that her father John Martin was of West Putford at his marriage but not born there. Of course, another issue is that their names are so common!!!

cheers,
