Thomas Todd, Mayor of Gisborne???
« on: Monday 21 May 07 09:14 BST (UK) »
My great grandmother had a brother, Thomas Todd, born 1865 Marylebone, Middx. We always believed she was an only child, so don't have much to go on. In 1881 he's with the family in Middx, but is not there in 1891.
I was passed on some family info and next to Thomas Todd it had "mayor of Gisborne".
My Mum recalls "talk of Australia" but not much else. She says there was a place with a strange name, maybe "wagga wagga" and talk of a race course.

Gisborne is in Victoria. Does anyone have any idea how I can find out past Mayors of Gisborne? Or any ideas on how I should proceed? It may well be that there is NO truth in the info I was given, but I'd like to find out either way.

There is also a Gisborne in New Zealand, which I will also have to check out, but as Mum recalled Australia, I thought I'd start here first.

Hello there
Wagga Wagga is a town in NSW it is about 500 klms northwestish of Gisborne in Victoria.

It will help us if you can give us Thomas Todds parents names

there is a death in Gisborne in 1936 of a Thomas Sea Todd but his age is 85 so that probably rules him out
the parents names are John Toddd and Eliz Rand

Hi Beverley

There was a will lodged with the Gisborne High Court (NZ) for a Thomas TODD, retired sheep farmer  in 1951 which may be worth keeping on the back burner if Australia doesn't show up anything....

Ok what I have is as follows:
Thomas Todd b 1865 Marylebone, Middx. Parents Thomas Todd and Margaret Spence.

The info I was given was by e-mail from someone I'd found connected to the family. She'd found a list relating to the Todd brothers (Thomas Todd seniors siblings) that was written byone of her mothers cousins. (Are you confused yet??!)

On the list for Thomas Todd senior, father to Thomas who may have gone to Australia or NZ it lists his children. Against Thomas Jnr it says "Mayor of Gisborne".

We have no way of knowing if there is any truth in this and I'm not really sure where to go with it. Does anyone have any ideas?

I googled "Thomas Todd Gisborne"

and up came this pdf file of Archives in New Zealand.

http://www.archives.govt.nz/docs/pdfs/ArchivesDirectory.pdf

Using the find feature for the word Todd, it stopped at the page for Gisborne  (page 42) - among Personal Papers listed are those of a Thomas Todd.

There is also a contact address for the Gisborne District Council Archives and also the Family History centre.

Christine,
Many thanks for that. I've been searching on Google to and it took me to Genforum NZ, and I found somebody on it that has been in touch with me via GenesReunited who is connected to my Todds. She had a whole list of names that she was looking for in NZ. She had a reply from a lady connected to the names..and guess what ? They're from gisborne, NZ!!!
So now all I need to do is find out if my Thomas did go or whether as I suspect, the information I was given was wrong and it's a completely different Thomas Todd that went!

Thank you everybody who has helped so far.
