Potton parish lookup
« on: Tuesday 22 May 07 11:59 BST (UK) »
Looking to confirm the following records from either the Potton parish records:

Marriage of Jarman (German) WAGSTAFF to Mary SALT in 1788

christenings of their children:
George (1790), John (1793), Susanna (1795), German (1797), William (1799), Young (1802) and James (1809)

Marriage of Susanna WAGSTAFF to James TOWNSEND in 1815

christenings of their children:
Emma (1816), Elizabeth (1818), Mary (1821) and Susanna (1821).

Any help would be much appreciated.
Michelle

I'm not sure where Sutton comes into it as all the events you mention are on the IGI as extracted entries from Potton parish register, and as such are reliable, unlike member member submissions.

My apologies for adding Sutton to the parish records. I have changed the subject of my post above so it only mentions Potton, to avoid inconveniencing anyone.

I realise that the IGI details are generally reliable. However, I have sometimes found that names in the IGI have been transcribed incorrectly compared to the original parish record. For instance, I found the IGI index listed one of my ancestor's names as Elizabeth Bartle, when in fact it was Elizabeth Butler.

The main reason I wished to confirm these details is that often other facts are written on the parish register, which are not included in the IGI index. Things like the bride and groom  home parish for marriages, or the father's occupation are sometimes found on christening records.  These are the sort of details I was after by asking to confirm these records.

Hi Michelle

I wasn't suggesting you shouldn't check the IGI entries, which is always worth doing to get any extra details. Merely that whoever looks it up only need check Potton. There's a lot of member submitted entries for these names on the IGI which are very unreliable - did one of them emigrate to Utah?

The transcript which is what most people use when doing look ups up to 1812 contains the detail you seek - the only detail it doesn't include are marriage witnesses.

Michelle,

Looked at the Potton PR (up to 1812) this morning, & it has the same detail for the 7 children of Jarman & Mary Wagstaff as found on IGI extracts, plus found the marriage entry of Jermain/Jerman Wagstaff, bach to Mary Salt, sp on July 11th 1788.

None of these entries gives any indication where they came from, or any occupation.
