Aldershot Memories
« on: Wednesday 23 May 07 13:21 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My great-grandfather, a Colour Sergeant with the Royal Irish Fusiliers, was based at Aldershot (1884-1890) after serving in Egypt and India.  While living there, he married and my grandmother was born.

Does anyone know of articles or other material where there is information about the living conditions, and the lives of families based there?

Regards,   Kathleen

Hi Kathleen,

If you Google,  "Army museums" you will find pages for the Aldershot Army Museum, hopefully they would be able to help you.

Good luck Salty

Hi Salty,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll give it a try.

I'm trying to put together not just the genealogy but also some social histories and stories about the wonderful cast of characters.  :)

Again, thanks,

Kathleen

Hi Wendi,

It was the South Camp where my GGrandfather married and my Grandmother was born -- 1887.  I'm interested in how it was for women and children there -- the living conditions, etc.

Hi Ray,

The Marriage Certificate shows that they were married 'in the Parish Church in the Parish of Aldershot in the County of Southampton'.

Are you searching this family?  Just wondering why you ask, but I don't mind sharing information.

Hi Kathleen
No I am not connected to the family, just wondered if it might have been one of the Army church's.
