Missing MANTELL baptisms - perhaps nonconformist
« on: Friday 25 May 07 10:42 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me to track down  baptisms for the following four people, all born in Faringdon to Dr George MANTELL and his wife Ann (nee ILES):

Charles Knight Mantell born about 1821
Elizabeth Martha Mantell born about 1823
Henry Axford Mantell born about 1826
Edward W Mantell born about 1831

An earlier four children born to this couple, although born in Berkshire, were actually baptised in Swindon where George's father was a Minister. However I can't find any record of baptisms for those above.

It is likely that they were baptised in Faringdon or perhaps Newbury, and probably in a congregational or other non-conformist chapel rather than parish church. There is no sign of them in IGI.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Phil

Just a thought - I noticed George re-married sometime pre-1837 to Rosetta.  Do you know where they married or where their children were christened as it may be the same venue as the ones you are looking for

Births Mar 1838

MANTELL  Rosetta    Faringdon  6 167
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

Many thanks Carole

The second marriage took place in Kensington, Middlesex, and it looks as if they went straight back to Berkshire after the wedding.

As far as I can tell, all eleven children from both marriages claimed the same place of birth (Faringdon, Berkshire) but I have only ever found baptisms for the first four, and that was in Wiltshire, where George's father was a non conformist minister.

I will keep your idea in mind, though, in case I turn up baptisms for the children born to the second wife, Rosetta Stacey.

Kind regards and thanks
