Scotch Church
« on: Friday 25 May 07 14:20 BST (UK) »
I have two families who baptised children at the Scotch Church, Wells Street, Marylebone, despite having been married at St Martins in the Fields and St George Martyr.  One family also baptised children at St Giles and St Andrew's, Holborn.

I have two questions:

1. How can I find out more about the Scotch Church?

2. Does the fact that children were baptised at the Scotch church indicate Scottish descent?

Both families bore the surname Turnbull which is more common on the English/Scottish borders but the records for St Martins show Turnbulls being married and baptised there back to the 1600s.

Any advice much appreciated

Hi Gill

When I've googled Scotch Church +Marylebone, I get lots of hits. It seems to either be Calvinist or Presbyterian, both indicating a Scottish connection. The Westminster City Archives
www3.westminster.gov.uk/docstores/publications_store/archives/infosheet4.pdf

seem to have some info, as does Victorian London:

Thanks Gadget - funnily enough its not unusual for me to have some whisky in my viens - it goes so well with the haggis!

Loved your website - I would like to do something similar but I am still waiting for Rootschat to give me access to the site I tried to set up.

I tried googling and like you came up with so many hits I didn't know where to start - looks as if next time I'm at Moorfields in just over 3 weeks I will have to hit the Westminster City Archives again.

Eye Hospital?

Regarding the more general question, how far back have you gone with your Turnbulls and what occupations?

The Scots did get around a bit - they might even have gone down with James VI/1st   :o

Think a Scottish storm is brewing here  :(

Yes, the eye hospital.

I am stuck on William Turnbull jeweller, died some time before 1841, married to Margaret who was born about 1800 in Marylebone.  I suspect he may have been bp in 1803 at the Scotch Church son of James Turnbull and Elizabeth Beer - his son Charles Thacker Turnbull (stoker, fireman and police officer) gave one of his sons the middle name 'Beer' - not exactly a common middle name!  I also suspect that he is the William Bear Turnbull who, according to the IGI, married Margaret Church in 1822.

I also think he had a brother Richard who married Hannah Elliot and baptised two sons, James and William (also 1803) at the Scotch Church. I think this other William is probably the piano fork maker who shows in all the census with his wife Margaret and family.

Just to confuse me further both William and Margarets  appear to have had a son William in 1836 - I think the William MacLavan Turnbull baptised at All Souls, Marylebone is the son of the piano fork maker.

Time to go home now - probably drop in again later after doing the shopping and cooking the dinner!
