Regimental Help Please
« on: Saturday 26 May 07 04:53 BST (UK) »
The chap on the left is my Gt Uncle Charlie. He was born in 1899 in Hoxton, and the family legend is that he lied about his age to join up.

Does anyone know which regiment's uniform he is wearing? I am assuming it would have been towards the end of the war (1917/18) because of his age?

Also, on the back of the postcard is a very blurry ink stamp which says "Mistegr(??). FUCHS, KOLN, Pisharlsstr (Could be an R) 78". Would they have had the photo taken in Germany in the middle of a war????

He was a lance corporal in either the North or South  Staffordshire Regiment. He has the Staffordshire Knot directly under the shoulder seem of his sleeve.

Hi,

He was in the South Staffs, have checked my Metal Shoulder Titles book.

If you look closeley you can see a double SS at the begining of his shoulder title.

Most likely taken as part of the Army of Occupation after WW1. Allied troops were based in parts of Germany for some years after WW1 and you find a great many photos dated 1919-21 and a lot were taken in Cologne.

Another great picture especially with the cloth 'knot' patch on the arm, a Divisional patch or a unit patch? Think it must be a specific Battallion or Regimental patch as not aware of a Divisional patch like that, most intriguing !

Can you give us his full name and Army number, so we can have a look for you, as he could be on the medal rolls.

Wow!!!!  :o

Thank you so much everyone for your help! I thought I was asking too much as there didn't seem to much in the way of identifying marks on the uniforms! But you've all come up trumps!  ;D

His name is Charles John Bristow, (only son of the Bugler chap on the Armed Forces main board). I do not know his army number. Where would I find it out? This is all totally new territory for me!

His son is almost 80 and knows nothing about his father's war service. It'll be lovely to be able to tell him all this!

There's a Private Charles J Bristow 42622 of South Staffs on the medal rolls which could be him..although he should be a lieutenant so don't know...if the pic was taken after the war maybe he got promoted later ?? Would he show as a private on the medal rolls in that case?

Why should he be a Lieutenant? the photo shows him as a Lance /Corporal, this could have been a acting rank. The MIC only shows him as a Pte in the S/Staff and his Army No 42622
