He must have been born after the 1851 census - he's not with the family shown at HO107/1645 287 22

Can you give a few more details?  There are two possible Charles Colwell born around the 1850 mark.   Is yours the one who is a soldier in 1881 with wife Jane?   The other one is married to Emily and is still in Brighton.
