I would love to come to a RootsChat Meet, but living abroad, it is difficult. However, that doesn't stop me from thinking about it, so here are a few thoughts I have had about RootsChat meets:
Judging by the response to the RootsChat #1 and #2 threads, there is obviously a lot of interest in RootsChat Meets, but also a lot of problems trying to find a venue to suit as many as possible.
What do you all think of this idea ?:
Apart from organised Meets, why not make any and every Family History Event, such as Family History Fairs, relevant exhibitions, etc. a RootsChat Event, too !
For instance, if somebody posts a notice "Family History Fair at XYZ in March",
or "Exhibition of Thingamyjigs at XYZ in May", then why not add to it, something like
"I'm going, anybody else ? let's meet up for coffee / lunch etc."
*********** It's a "meet" already if two people meet up ! ****************
This has the advantage that
1) lots of little "meets" can be set up easily without a lot of organising
2) the venue is already fixed, and sometime, there will be venue near you
3) people who had vaguely thought of going to a F-H fair "sometime", or who would like to go but don't fancy going alone, would now have an extra reason for going
4) the event itself gets more publicity on RootsChat, with members asking who's going ?, where shall we meet ?, etc
5) If there are lots of RootsChat Meets per year, RootsChatters living abroad are more likely to be able to find a venue somewhere, to fit in with their visits to Britain
p.s.
Using a Family History Event as a "hook" for a RootsChat Event could work for RootsChatters everywhere in the world !
p.p.s.
maybe all postings on "RootsChat Meets" should be on the "Events" board, because, after all,
a RootsChat Meet is also an Event !
