1871 census
« on: Monday 28 May 07 20:23 BST (UK) »
Hi:

I'm looking for Christina ANDERSON b 1864 and her sister Annie born 1866.  These dates are somewhat flexible.  These girls were sent to Canada in 1872 under the British Home children scheme, so parents names are not known.

Originally we thought they came from the Edinburgh area, but now are led to believe they may have come from the Renfrew area.

I realise it's a longshot, but can anyone find these two girls in the 1871 census?

Thank you, Linda

I did see a possible entry in Renfrewshire when you posted this query in the Midlothian board...now to find them again ::)  I'll have another look or if not I'm sure other people will too.

Regards.

Thank you Monica it would be much appreciated.  We have so little to go on and I think these kids only knew what they were told re birth dates and places, which wasn't always the truth.

How sure are you of the birth years? I think one of the reasons I didn't post (apart from different county) is that the two Anderson girls,  Ann and Christina born in Paisley and boarding there in an Adam household, but the ages were the other way round. This is the closest I can see on IGI for their births:

ANN JANE ANDERSON  Birth: 26 APR 1865 Middle Paisley, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland

CHRISTINA ANDERSON  Birth: 11 DEC 1869 Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland

Births may have been illegitimate, only mother Jane Anderson shows on both entries.

This Ann and Christina show as ages 5 and 1 respectively.

Monica:

I'd love to see the census entry - the birth dates are very flexible, neither girls had birth certificates and we are only going by the report from the Home they were sent to. :-\

Census entry below:

William Adam    54, Thread Mill Worker, b. Paisley
Marion Adam    54, b. Paisley
Marion Adam    21, daughter
James Adam    13, son
Alexander Adam    8, son
John Adam    7, grandson, b. Greenock
William Adam    5, grandson, b. Paisley
James Adam    1, grandson, b. Gason(spll?), Lanarkshire
Ann Anderson    5, boarder, b. Paisley
Christina Anderson 1, boarder, b. Paisley
John Craig    10 months, boarder, b. Paisley

Address: 2 Ferguslie Walk, Paisley

I believe that Marion Adam's maiden name was probably LEITCH going by the birth entries for sons James and Alexander above.

Monica:

I think we may have got it!  Christina apparently thought her mothers name was Marion Isabel Billbrook Livingstone.  We now know that Livingstone was the name of the couple she was sent to live with from the Home here in Canada, Billbrook was the name of the women who brought these children over on the ship from Scotland, and now the name Marion shows up!

Perhaps in a little girls mind these names all got mixed up?  It is certainly worth persuing!

Many thanks, Linda

Just a little more background. Christina Anderson was born in 1869 at the address that she was boarding at in the 1871 Census. So, the IGI birth entry with mother Jane (a domestic servant) ties in with what we have.

What the connections are to the Adam household, if only we knew!
