Slosh/Flosh near Kirkland or Blencarn
« on: Tuesday 05 June 07 13:32 BST (UK) »
Can any one help me with a place called Slosh. I think it was a farm definetely in the Parish of Kirkland and could be near Blencarn in Cumberland.

It is mentioned in an ancestors will in 1740. It is not the Slosh near Appleby Westmorland.

Thanks

Judy

Hi Judy

Could it be Flosh?

Flosh is just on the outskirts of Kirkland heading west on the road towards Skirwith.

I found it on Get-a-map. Search for Kirkland (3rd one listed) then zoom in
http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/

Also on Old Maps. Search for Flosh. then select Flosh, Kirkland, Penrith, then select the 1867 Cumberland map centre bottom and zoom in.

Hi Sitheil,
Thanks very much for that suggestion.

I have the name on a Will and Letters of Administration. It was given as 'Slosh' by the records Office and it certainly looks like Slosh. However that was in 1740 & 1744 so S's & F's were always being mixed up and the spelling of names  so it is a good suggestion. Being so close to Kirkland it is a definite possibility.

If anyone else has any ideas or knows anything about  this I would be grateful

Thank you
Judy

Just Googled Flosh. Guess what I found that I had asked about Richardson's from Kirkland in another posting. I had a reply about Wills and they were named on it from FLOSH.

When I was up there the other weekend I must have gone straight past it!

Thank you for your help

Hello, I don’t know if you’re still monitoring this or even still interested in Flosh?  I live at Flosh, just outside Kirkland and although I did some research shortly after we came here I haven’t done anything recently. I’d be interested to know what your family will shows with regard to Flosh. I have discovered that a Dobson family lived here later  in the 18th century although I’ve not been able to prove any connection to my Dobson’s. All the dates stones in the property have the surname initial D and I had wondered if the Dobsons had been here a long time. Certainly the family appear to have been based at a nearby farm called skeleto all the dates stones in the property have the surname initial D and I had wondered if the Dobsons had been here a long time. Certainly the family appear to have been based as a nearby farm called Skelling. I had wondered if they had spread out from there. However if your Richardsons owned or were long term tenants of the property earlier in the 18 century then that probably disproves my theory. I hope your researches have been successful. Unfortunately for me I have an ancestor, Richard Dobson who although I know he married at Morland in 1785 and was a husband man of Crackenthorpe, (near Appleby) at the time, seems impossible to trace further back. There are several Dobson families in the area at the time but none who have a son Richard, in the late 1750s, who lived to adulthood. Richard died at Hag Gap, Brough in Aug 1815 aged 56, although of course the age may be an approximation. Regards, Duncan Dobson

That is so interesting. Yes still monitoring & interested in anything about it. If you are researching the farm then you may like various wills/administrations that I have. I would be interested in anything you have found out too.

Also looking at my records there is a Robert Cannon from Flosh buried in 1698. I shall have to look further and see if there are any more references to it. They will all be fairly early if I have.

I don't know if I can private message you but will try then you can contact me privately. However I don't think you can use the private messaging system until you have posted 2 or maybe 3 posts - it is designed to stop 'spam'.

Best Wishes,
Judy

Hello
I am descended from RICHARDSON = CANNON  from Kirkland/Blencarn.
But no known connection to Flosh.
Let me know if this could tie in with your tree and I will dig out by info.
Cheers

Hi David,
Can you tell me a little more about your Richardson = Cannon. Their names and dates and anything else  you may have then I can look more into my tree and see if they are connected.

Thanks.
