question about marriage attestations
« on: Thursday 07 June 07 22:52 BST (UK) »
I have no experience in tracking these down, and
I wondered if it would give me any useful info.

I have a couple who married Strand 1891 at the Registry Office by certificate.
I have the marriage cert.
What I need to know is more info on the husband - where he was born, his birthdate, more details of his father's name, his mother's name, etc.
Even if I got an answer to only one of these questions, it would make a critical difference to me.
Do you think any of this info would be available through the marriage attestation, and, if so, how might I get hold of it?

thanks.

As far as I am aware unlike Scotland and the Colonies there has never been an attestation associated with an English Marriage.  There is not likely to be any information available other than what is recorded on the marriage certificate.

Not the answer I wanted to hear, but, thank you, David, for clarifying.

There are marriage licence allegations, but these only apply to Church weddings, where the wedding was by license

Agreed but before anyone goes rushing to find the licence allegations they contain little extra information other than possibly the names of two bondsmen.  Further back they can contain information confirming that the participants were of full age or had their parents consent which may not be in earlier parish registers.

I guess the word I was looking for was "allegations".
However, I can see that this will not be useful, alas.
