Hi does anyone know if the moss bay steelworks, Workington still operate. I have tried to google it with little success. On my uncle's death cert. it had that he died there in 1968 and I wondered if they would have records. Cass

If there was anything still there, I would have expected to find some mention of it here (but there is none) -

It seems that things were difficult in 2000 - http://www.corusgroup.com/en/news/news/2000/2000_reduction_in_manning_config_at_corus_rail

My mother was once secretary to the boss at the Moss Bay coke ovens - some 1970s pics of the place here -

Hi Geoff, did your mother work there in 1968?? Would she have had anything to do with the workers?? My uncle was called John 'Ousby' Whitfield. From the death cert. it appeared that he actually died at work of a heart attack. Cass

:-* hi, i know times gone by, but if your still intrested in mossbay, try www.timesandstar.co.uk,
and go to forums you will find a section for local history, there are 2 good sites full of photos of mossbay, and a link to a site run by the son of the manager of the site when it was at its peak in the 60s/70s,.
there is also book about the works, but i cant remember off hand the title, but i may be able to find that out, there is a new one out now, but its not as informative as the first,

Hi

Try this one.

http://www.banklands.com

It's from a local magazine.

I've just tried it.

You could even email the proprietor for where to find info.  His father also worked there.

Best wishes
