COMPLETED Minster of sheppey institution for the poor.1891 census
« on: Sunday 10 June 07 20:31 BST (UK) »
Will somone check for  Ethel Mannell age3 pauper/inmate in the Minster at Sheppey (apparently some sort of institution for the poor). Her birthplace was listed at Sheerness, Kent.

Is there any information about this place on the internet please?

There is a Maud Manuell with exactly these details on the 1891. Is this who you mean???

Did you find the name on the Index???

Where was the index please?

Someone mentioned that there was a Maud Manuell living in that place during the 1891 census and I wondered if it could have been Maud Mannell born in 1888 in Sheerness to Frances Mannell.

Frances who was Cornish, was living in Cornwall during the 1891 census and I couldn't find her daughter Maud anywhere.
Prior to that Frances was living with her father Jervis Mannell in Sheerness.

With the similar name and the correct age I would imagine it is the right person. By 1901 Ethel was living with her mother and stepfather in Cornwall.

The Index I am referring to is the Ancestry Index but you have answered my question by stating that someone gave you the information.

I would say that the Maud Manuell on the 1891 census is the same Maud Mannell who is living with Stephen and Frances Rule on the 1901..

I am just a little confused because you keep referring to her as Ethel.

Presumably Maud was placed in the institution  as she was illegitimate and Frances was unable to care for her at that time.

Thanks for your reply.

She was called Ethel Maud Mannell. Frances's father John Jervis Mannell died in 1890 in Sheerness and I believe from what I have found on the internet that her mother died in 1883 in the same area.

Hi
Not sure if this will be any help to you but I found:

E Mannel (sic) aged 1 buried 24-2-1883 and
E Mannel (sic) aged 36 buried 20-3-1883

both in Sheppey Cemetery

I checked the Minster and Queenborough PRs but couldn't find any record of any baptisms for any Mannell's

Thank-you for that information.

The Mannell's were born in Cornwall and were living there during the 1881 census and Jervis was a ship carpenter.

E Mannell age 36 must  have been his wife and perhaps the child was born in Sheerness.

I wonder what happened to his other daughters who according to the 1881 census were Gertrude age 7 and Euridice age 2.

Perhaps they returned to Cornwall with their sister Frances.

It is sad to see Maud (Frances daughter)was left behind. I wonder when she was returned to her mother.

Frances must have been about 16 when she had her daughter.

Yes, it is sad but at least she was re-united with her mother. Many children weren't. My grandmother was placed with foster parents and her natural mother went on to marry and have another family. She is missing as a baby on the 1901 census so goodness knows where she was.
