Ancestors in St Mary's, Poole?
« on: Monday 11 June 07 22:58 BST (UK) »
St Mary's church in Longfleet Road, Poole wants to concrete over the graveyard in order to build a new church hall and parking area.  The church authorities would like to hear from anyone who has an ancestor buried there; I think they are wanting to move all the headstones but are not going to disturb the graves.

This does not seem a popular idea; one local is threatening to chain herself to a family headstone!

Hi Nanny Jane

Yes I heard about this - I live locally and agree with your sentiments.

Here's some more info and much discussion about the situation:
http://www.thisisbournemouth.co.uk/mostpopular.var.1411581.mostcommented.distress_at_plans_for_car_park_over_graves.php

Apparently the church's congregation is growing at such a rate that it's facilities need to be expanded. Personally I find this hard to believe. Either way, there are several multi-storey car parks just down the road.

Dave

PS - Perhaps a moderator might think about moving this to the Dorset board?

I believe I have relatives buried in Poole. I don't even know where yet so if this disappears many, like me will lose any opportunity to even find out.

What a pointless waste! :(

St Mary's is one of the churchyards/cemeteries that has been recorded by the Dorset FHS; details on www.dorsetfhs.org.uk.  You might still be able to find your Poole relatives.
