Hello wozzle

Your guess is correct, what was Great Street is now Manor Road but I don't know when it changed - I'll ask around, someone in the village will know.

Re the old map, look at old-maps.co.uk they have one for Sulgrave 1887.  The vast majority of houses in the village still don't have numbers, only names - is there a house in particular you're looking for?

Hi Jamys.

I've looked through the 1881 census for Sulgrave hardly any places seem to have names. The census starts in Great St. then goes back and forth between Great St. and Spring Gardens. It then goes into Little St. then onto Helmdon Rd. It then goes into Abbey End. I have an up to date map of Sulgrave but cannot find either Abbey End or Spring Gardens. Have you any idea where these two places are.

There was no specific house that I was looking for I just thought I might have been able to figure out whereabouts in Great St. my ancestor lived but without numbers or names of houses it would be very difficult to work out.

Hello wozzle

There is a Spring Gardens but I don't believe it's the same Spring Gardens as in the '81 census.  However, Spring Gardens is still in Manor Road (ex Great Street).  Going down Manor Road towards Sulgrave Manor, Spring Gardens is now a semi built during the 1900's, on the right just passed Yew Tree Cottage.

There isn't an Abbey End and I've not heard mention of it and I'm certain there's never been an abbey in Sulgrave.  The village expert is on holiday at the moment but I'll ask the question when he returns.

I believe that quite a few homes fell into disrepair and have been demolished over the years and the gaps filled with newer buildings.  Also when new people buy and move in they often change the name of the house.  A right parlarva for genealogists, meter readers and the postman!!

OK, thats better.  There is a Church Street - come up Little Street to the junction - Helmdon Road if you turn left - School Street if you turn right - Church Street is diagonally across from Little Street and goes passed the church to the junction with Park Lane.

Does that make sense?

I'm putting my e-mail in a PM to you - I have a simplified map of Sulgrave if you want it.
