Royal Fusiliers/Uniform identification
« on: Friday 15 June 07 19:47 BST (UK) »
Hi, with the help of Rambler I've downloaded a medal card for who I believe could be one of my grandfather's brothers.

Since I have his corp, rank and regiment number is there any further I can go with this information? Is there anywhere I can lookup someone using the information to see where they came from or the like?
Derby: WOODCOCK (Donnington)
Devon: HARRIS (Plymouth)
Lancashire: DERRICK
Lincolnshire: CROPPER, WOODCOCK (Boston)
London: BARKER, DUGGIN, HARRIS, HINTON, HULBERT, WHITE
Wales: HARRIS, PRITCHARD (Pembrokeshire)
Warwickshire: DERRICK, WOODCOCK
Desperate for my Woodcocks from Birmingham!

...Some rootschatters  have access to various details  and some have special interests in various reigments you never know your luck!

Here are both medal cards.

The first (Woodcock, C C) is I think my grandfather, Celestine Cyril Woodcock and the other is I think his one of his older brothers, Leonard Victor Woodcock.

Well the happy chappy in the photo is on neither of the medal cards!

He is Royal Artillery, and has a bandolier, and certainly not infantry! :o

The medal cards state a Fusilier, and a pte from the Bedfordshires who was then transferred to the Essex Regt....Not a gunner!!!

If you are certain about the photo being your grandfather, I'm afraid you haven't the right medal card...sorry....  :-[

I think some more digging is required here...Did your chap survive the war? Have you any other "CC Woodcocks" on your medal card print out? Or even just "C Woodcock"???

Here is the only other card. On the website it says this is a "Gilestone"

I can see the "i" when I zoom in using Photoshop but I can't see a "G" or an "o"

That's your chap!

Celestine, Royal Garrison Artillery! And his rank is Gunner...

The website isn't always very good at transcribing...and sometimes gets it wrong...One just has to be used to reading that type of script, and the transcribers are human and make mistakes....To my eyes, that is Celestine...especially as the second initial letter is also a C, and has the same curl to the top...

That last one and "C C Woodcock" were on the same card so its VERY lucky I got Celestine's card - I actually "paid for" C C's!!!  :o

When I first saw "Celestine's" card I had a gut feeling that was him but wasn't too sure because of what the website said. I zoomed in using Photoshop and as I said earlier, I can definitely see the "i" in "Gilestone"

I'm also aware that sometimes names were written as someone thought it was spelt.

To me it says "Enr" under rank - am I right or is it "Gnr" for Gunner?

Forgot to ask - do the numbers (8/12/54) in the remark column mean anything?

On the National Archives site I read numbers are/were often used as abbreviations but can't match anything!
