1901 - Victoria Terrace, Folkestone
« on: Saturday 16 June 07 11:23 BST (UK) »
???  I am researching a family who sent their son from Clerkenwell, London to a school in Victoria Terrace, Folkestone in 1861. This is a family which sent their children away to school and I'm now looking for a son of the original pupil. I suspect that he may have been sent to the same school in 1901. I found Victoria Terrace in the description of district 12 but just couldn't find any returns for Victoria Terrace, even though in the 1861 census it had 3 pages.
The family name is Pratt and the person I'm trying to find is Guy Algernon Pratt, born Bletchingley, Surrey in 1889. He is nowhere to be found in 1901 and I wondered whether he might have been mis-transcribed whilst at school.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Barry

Hi Barry

Where exactly was this Victoria Terrace in 1861 ie. the roads or terraces before and after that particular address in the order of the census returns?

;D Many, many thanks for your quick responses. I had only just found him myself by using a sort of reverse logic - asking for people in Kent named Guy and there he was, mis-transcribed twice, as Prott and as coming from Yorkshire !! His sister, Ida G Pratt, is in a school in the same district (St Peter Intra).
In 1891 he was in the census as Percy A Pratt !!
I can find no record of his subsequent marriage although he is supposed to have become a GP doctor (like his father and maternal grandfather) and married a nurse. They are both supposed to have gone off to WW1 and never returned, leaving a housekeeper to bring up their child (Louis D L Pratt) born in St Pancras in 1912.
In the phone book for Glamorgan, Wales in 1923 there is an entry for G. Algernon Pratt, Physcn & Surgn. Is it possible there were two G Algernon Pratts, both doctors of medecine ?
Something of a mystery, I think.

Barry

hello

I saw the Percy A Pratt and wondered if this was him, that is why I asked if you had him on the 1891 census.

Do you have the birth certificate of Louis D L Pratt with mothers maiden name?

It doesn't seem very likely that there were two with such an unusual name does it?

Royal College of Surgeons - admission of new members (The Times 12 Feb 1915) includes G A PRATT of Guys Hospital.

Have you seen this?

Fantastic !!
The reference to the Who's Who opens up a lot of possibilities for further investigation. What a pity the whole book isn't online.
I really am most grateful and envious !!

Thanks, Bill. In the description of Folkestone district 12 it says it includes the whole of Folkestone-next-Sandgate, including Victoria Terrace and I looked through all 41 pages but couldn't find it !!
Events have since overtaken the need to find that particular road but I do wish the roads in these towns were indexed with hyperlinks !!
