John Thomas Ball - Kingsley - Obituary
« on: Sunday 17 June 07 12:22 BST (UK) »
G'day All,

I have recently come across the gravesite (well I didn't I am in Australia.. you get the picture.!!) of my Great Grandfather John Thomas Ball.

He is buried in the Kinglsey Church Cemetery after passing away on 16 November 1944.

He was a soldier of some repute during the Boer and First World War, and would love to know of there is an obituary hidden in the archives of a local Kinglsey/Cheshire newspaper.

Could anyone point me in the right direction..??

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave,
If your John Thomas Ball was in the Manchester regiment I have found 2 mentions of him in the London Gazette for 1918 and 1915.
If this is the right person I can send you the details.

Best regards

G'day Cathy,

Yes it is him! He served with the Manchesters for almost 35 years, in both the Boer and First Wars, earning himself a Military Cross and 4 Mentions in Despatches. I have about 15 London Gazette entries for him, and have most of his 'military' source documents.

What I am after now are his 'extras' ie. newspaper articles.

Thanks for the lookup anyways!

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave,
Do you think the Cheshire Record Office can advise you of which newspaper it would appear in?
May be then someone can do a look up for you. If it should be in one of the local papers held in my local library I would certainly try and find it for you.
Can you email them?

Regards

Cathy,

I have a reply from the Cheshire services which indicated that it could appear in the following:

Chester Chronicle
Chester Observer
Runcorn Guardian

Would these appear in your local library?? They are free for a look if you visit, or they offer the services of a researcher (for a rather hefty price for a look!)

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,
These papers do not appear in my local library. Perhaps you could start a new request for a lookup at the Cheshire Record Office from these paper's.
In the meantime I shall keep checking to see if you have had any response and if not when I do eventually next get to visit the record Office I will gladly look for you.
Good luck.
