Lookup for Petty in 1841 Staffordshire please
« on: Wednesday 08 December 04 14:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Im trying to find details of a Mary Petty born (probably in Oldbury) Worcestershire/Staffordshire (whichever it was back then!) in c.1777. Surname may be spelled Pettey - but probably the former. I would particularly like to know who her husband was. They would probably have been married between 1795-1805.

She is down in 1851 as being 74 yrs old and living with her daughter Deborah Hughes (nee Petty) and William Hughes (Deborah's husband) and their family at 32 Halesowen Street, Oldbury.

Mary is a pauper in 1851 (next to pauper theres a word thats illegible - something like _ll__lwife maybe?? Its definitely got 'l's' in it and ends in wife anyway!
It states she is born in Oldbury, Worcestershire - but it just says ditto from all the family above. The enumerator may have just presumed she was born in the same place as the rest or something....so that place of birth may be inaccurate.
She's a widow by 1851.

I have found a Mary Petty who died in March 1852 in West Bromwich (6b 341) - im pretty sure thats her.
Ive tried looking her up on West Midlands BMD but there are no records yet, so i tried Staffordshire (as there is a discrepancy in borders last century) and she doesnt seem to be there either. I've also followed a link on rootschat to BMD's in Halesowen and the surrounding area - but im fumbling in the dark really.

Heres some additional info if you need it:

Deborah Petty b. 1814 Oldbury, Worcestershire - so theres likely to be lots of other siblings before her.

William Hughes b.1815 Burton upon Trent. He's a Labourer. He was still alive in 1881 but Deborah had died - i cant find any record of her death though. She died between 1871 and 1881.

William and Deborah had children: Maria, William, Sarah, Mary Ann, Susan David John Elizabeth and Henry (known as Thomas).

I wondered if you could help find Mary in 1841 or if you have any advice on what i should try next??

Thanks very much for your help...
Alison

Hi Alison,

I've had a look on my 1841 staffordshire census and Oldbury is not included.

Alison,

This looks like it could be Deborah's marriage, found on the IGI:

Batch M040144 / Film 0378770
William HUGHES & Deborah PETTEY marr 26 Jan 1834, Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester, England.

Oldbury is only 3 or 4 miles from Dudley. No other PETTY marriages in that batch, which goes way back into 1700s.

Father's name is probably not given on the original document - if it were, it would usually be recorded in the IGI entry (fathers' names are given for marriage after civil registration started in 1837; also before then for under age marriage where father's consent was needed).

However if you view the film of the original document at your local LDS family history centre, there will be at least 2 witnesses to the marriage - you may just get lucky with those names.

Mary's death certificate would probably show her husband's name (under the field for occupation!) eg. "Widow of ??? Petty". However this is not guaranteed - UK death certificates are not very informative in my experience.

Cheers,
Steve
