Marriage lookup - Cannell/Ellison

Hi,
Please could someone check the date of the marriage between Thomas Ellison and Margaret Cannell in Mauhgold.  The marriage cert I received shows a date of April 22 1857 but I think/ hope this is wrong and should be 1851. Thanks

THE   IGI     shows    22  /   April     1851     as     you   expected  .   Extracted    from    parish    records .

Civil    registration   started    for    marriages   in   IOM  in    1884  .   Do     you    have     a  photocopy     or   

handwritten      transcript     of     parish    records    ?    Is   there    an   IGI   error   ?

Hi,

I  do not have a transcipt of the parish records but I have a copy of their marriage certificate which shows a date of 1857 at the top of the cert but alongside the date April 22 when they were married shows nothing. Their son Thomas Ellison, however, was born in 1852 in Ramsey so I would have thought they would have married before or the same year as he was born.  But you never know!!!!

Thomas    was    not    apparently    registered    at  birth    --very    few    births  were    from    1821  ---    compulsory

registration    in    IOM   from    1878----  &    so    you    have   baptism   from   parish   records  ---which   church  ?

I    had    not    read   your   other    string.   Looked   up    census   independently.   If    age    correct   on   '61,

Margaret    would    have    been    a  very   young    Mum   in '51.    Could    parents    have   with held   consent   ?

  I have Margaret's year of birth as 1827 born in Ballaugh  - is that different from the date you found for her?

The marriage certificate states 'full age' under the age column so no clue there on their true ages.

I was begining to wonder whether Thomas snr had been married before but he is shown as a batchelor on the cert.

There    seems    to    be    an     error    in     wife's   age     in     1861 /   as     enumerator    shows    her    as    only

25years   .

No    baptisms    showing    in    IGI/   familysearch.org  for    any    of    these    children   .   That   is    parish   church

records.   It    was   possible    to    marry   other    than   in    Church   of    England    after     1849   &    so    you

can    presume    they   had    no    objections   .  Perhaps    they   had    a    change    of    religion   later    &    then

baptisms    would   not    show    as     some    churches    refused    to    allow    their    records   to    be    copied.

I have looked at 'Family Search '  IGI web site and have found 2 christenings in 1826 in Kirk Michael for a Margaret Cannell and whose father's name is John - perhaps one of these is correct which would make her age more acceptable.
I also looked at the IGI for her children. They all appear to have been christened in Ramsey between 1852 -1864.
