Where does he later claim to have been born?

Very few 1831 censuses remain;
The 1841 contains very little info...

One family member says he was born in Cayton. but I haven't been able to confirm this.

I found his marriage to Mary Brown in 1853  in Bridlington, Yorkshire  from the BMD site.

By 1857 William & Mary were in Canada.

If you buy his 1853 MC, it should tell you his father's name/occupation. There is nothing particularly obvious on the 1841 for Wil* Mal*y born Yorkshire. Jools

A family member has put his date of birth on the info. on family search.  I thought that checking the census that I might have been able to find his family. By the 1851 census, he probably wasn't at home, since he was married in 1853.

Thanks for looking.

So you haven't found him on any census, and you haven't got his marriage certificate.  I strongly suggest you need that MC to provide corroboration of what someone has put on the LDS site (it wouldn't be the first time someone has gone on a wild goose chase courtesy of incorrect info on the LDS).  You need independent proof of who his father was and what year he was born.  Jools

I have just found out that William was born 1830 in Folkton, Yorkshire & his Father was Thomas born in 1786 & His Mother  was  Christiana.

Would this help on finding them on the census?
