There are some links between Chorley and Liverpool. For example, Henry Tate the sugar magnate was born in Chorley and set up his business in Liverpool.

I have several people in my tree who moved to Liverpool from the Chorley area - big city, bright lights - and my great grandmother ended up in Chorley having been born in the slums of Liverpool.

There seems to be a tendency for country girls to go into service in cities and city girls to go into service in small towns.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.
