The family in Patagonia
« on: Tuesday 19 June 07 03:07 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I think this is a charming photo, taken in Patagonia in maybe about 1920 or so...the parents have both died by now and the children are grown.

The picture isn't in bad shape, so I don't think it needs much in the way of restoration. Here is what I'm hoping someone can do: I would like a number placed on every person, hopefully not obscuring the faces. I have the key to who they all are, but I couldn't get numbers drawn on them with Paint, which is the only photo manipulation program I have. Can anyone rise to this occasion? :D

Thanks everybody,
Cheers,
China
PS, and maybe identify the car?

Hello China,

Just to be awkward , rather than putting numbers all over your picture , I went for colour coding .
See what you think , let me know if you want any alterations.

Can alter.

Model T ford 1913 would be my guess (Acetylene lamps)

Best regards George

Hmmmm, brilliant, both of them. George's version is exactly what I was hoping for, but then Jim (true to form) threw in something different :D They're both wonderful and now I'm in a dither about which to use...I may have to sleep on it :D Thanks and cheers, y'all ;D

The car in the photo has black rimmed headlamps.

A Model T Ford 1913 car is at:
http://www.modelt.ca/13T-fs.html
Hmm - seems to have brass rimmed headlamps?  And the
headlamps on the 1911 version at the URL below also seem
to have brass rimmed headlamps.

Electric headlamps with brass rims were said to have been
introduced in 1915; headlamp rims were said to have changed
to black painted steel in 1916.

PS: Stunning photo!

Spot on JAP.

It has to be 1916 onwards then.

Okay then...1916 onward. Both parents had died by 1920, and my grandmother (#6) left for Canada in 1923. Catherine Jane's (her mother) gravestone mentions that her death was sudden, so I imagine she was in decent health and would have been in the photo if possible. So it's down to three years, I would guess.

My mother wrote a short family history that mentions her father (the doctor) did his house calls mostly on horseback as there wasn't much in the way of roads, but when the weather was suitable sometimes he drove in an "open touring car". I wonder if that's the car.

Caz, I thought of doing something like that but they're so jumbled up I thought it would be confusing. I'm easily confused, y'know... :D

Thanks everybody.
