South Shields union workhouse 1891(Harton)
« on: Tuesday 19 June 07 14:50 BST (UK) »
Hi I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find records for admissions and discharges for the South Shields Workhouse (Harton) I believe I have come accross one of my ancestors Elizabeth Gosling on the 1891 census in South Shields workhouse and would like to know why she was in there she would be aged 13ish at the time of the census.
Thank you

In 1891 her two brothers James (11), Joseph (7), and her sister Susanah (9) were living with their grandparents John and Mary Dobson, both aged 64. There is no sign of her parents in 1891 or 1901. It looks as though the grandparents were looking after the younger children and Elizabeth was in the Workhouse to give them a beak. Of course she could have just been in for the weekend, and gone back to her grandparents on the Monday morning. In 1901 both James and Joseph were boarders at different addresses.
Susannah Dobson Gosling was married in the March ¼ 1901 in Castle Ward Northumberland.
