Thomas Woods and Johanna Hickey
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 14:29 BST (UK) »
Looking for marriage details for Thomas Woods and Johanna Hickey.

They had at least three children

Thomas 1841 - 1860
William 1847 - 1931
Patrick 1850 - 1870

The last two born in Roscrea not sure about Thomas jr.

Any help greatly appreciated

I've just made a search on the North Tipperary Heritage site

http://tipperarynorth.brsgenealogy.com/

and found their marriage in 1828, but as luck would have it, no details on their parents.

It does say that Johanna Hickey was living at Corbally when she married which may prove helpful later, but a search for her birth was fruitless.

Hopefully some Hickey researcher may be able to help me.

If they were married in 1828 and known children were born 1841-1850 there were likely more children born between 1828-1841. If you can find the church they attended and the records go back that far you may be able to get details of other children. Marriages usually took place in the bride's church which may or may not be the same church the children were baptised in.

Hi Aghadowey,

Thanks for that. I did have a look at a film of the register in the NAI but it was very difficult to read in parts. I have a whole list of Woods children but only those three with a mother named Johanna.

Thomas Woods was a policeman when he married in 1828 and when William was born in 1847 so it is possible that he was stationed in a different parish for the first years of their marriage.

Yes, a policeman might be transferred to different places. Keep in mind that Johanna might be listed under variations of Johanna such as Johannah, Hanna, Hannah, Anna, Ann, Annie, Hanora, Nora.

Aghadowey you are right again.

Her name was listed as Johanna, Anna and Hannah for the three births I have!

I must admit I would not have expected to see Hanora or Nora. It pays to keep an open mind.

Thanks again.

On a related issue, I have been totally stumped in trying to find a record for Thomas Woods in the RIC even though he is specifically referred to as an RIC member on his son's birth cert.

I have looked at every recruit with the surname Woods but none of them had enlisted at that early date. Do you think that he might have been a "local constable" who was subsequently "incorporated" into the RIC? Even so, surely he would appear in the register.

Not sure about RIC records since I've not had to trace any yet. Would Thomas Woods appear in any local directories?

Hmmmmmmm.

I remember when I started out looking for ancestors I took the standard "scattergun" approach looking everywhere and anywhere but without a specific query in mind.

I definitely recall seeing a "Constable/Officer/Segeant (I'm not sure which) Woods" with an address at the court house in Roscrea in one of the directory extracts online but for the life of me I can't remember where I saw it and can't find it now!

I have also come across a "Constable Woods" in a couple of coroner's reports. I will have to dig out my copies of them to see if the dates coincide.
