Anyone any thought on:

RG10, Piece: 652, Folio: 32, Page: 12

Thomas Stockley b1851 Grocers Assistant along with a whole gang of them. One of our Thomas' ended up a Grocer!

The original place of birth is difficult to read. Can anyone see 'Dorset'? Spoken in a "Darset" accent to a Londoner. :) Oh I do hope so!

The enumerator has muddled the two entries and Wiltshire, Devizes is crossed out for Thomas as it should be the next entry.   Have you tried looking for this particular Thomas on othere census years?  That might eliminate him.

Hi, I am a fairly new family historian, but am the great grand-daughter of Thomas Stockley who married Mary Ann Collins.

I have (somehow!) managed to locate the 1871 census record for Thomas, details as follows:

RG10/1136; Folio: 88; Page: 29

Thomas married Mary Ann in Dover 1880 and I have 8 children listed for them, the youngest of which was my maternal grandfather.

I might have more info of use, but can't guarantee it.

Can anyone provide me with a link to other Dorset sites?  I too seem to have a lot of Stockley relatives registered in Corfe Castle (I visited a couple of weeks ago), but don't know how to identify them, other than through the Ancestry website.  Any help would be much appreciated...

Thanks

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.  I can't help with specific Dorset sites (though note the Online Parish Clerk mentioned earlier) but another good site for baptisms and marriages is www.familysearch.org     It is not full coverage and the extracted records are more reliable than those put on by LDS church members but it is a very useful tool.   www.genuki.com is well worth a visit too.  If you look at the top of the Dorset board there should be a list of useful links that will help you.

Hi alicotton,

I may be able to help. If you PM me with your e-mail address I will invite you to my Ancestry tree. If you are  GR member I have one there too.

I have done quite a lot of work with the Stockleys from Corfe Castle. Which child of Thomas are you descended from? I have

William George
Ellen Mildred
Charles
Winifred Annie
Bessie Louise
Alfred Henry
Frances Esme
Frederick Thomas

Am I right?

My eyes must be going. :)

This is great! I do hope we can compare notes.

I am confident that your Thomas' parents were George Stockley and Ann Damon. I believe I have the rest of his line. I also thing Mary Ann's parents were Milliam Collins and Ellen Audley.

Good to meet another distant relative. :)

Progress at last!!  :D

I've been in contact with a descendant of the Thomas who married a May. Between us we are coming to a conclusion that this is actually Thomas Swyer Stockley.

Evidence is sketchy right now but they have found a birth of an Edith Swyer Stockley in Dorchester to match with their eldest child. They are ordering the birth cert to confirm mums real name. I hope the next step is to buy Thomas Swyers marriage cert to find his parents ... and a new name for his wife. :)

Watch this space.
