Old Balham Streets
« on: Monday 25 June 07 17:35 BST (UK) »
Does anybody here know anything about what happened to Kate Street and Larch Road in Balham? I am completely unable to find these streets on MapPoint. The closest I've found is Larch Close near Fernlea Road which is where I would have guessed it might be from the residences of various relatives during the period 1900-1940.

I read somewhere that there is now a school on the area where Kate Street used to be. My great-grandmother lived on Kate Street until her death in 1972, so the buildings must have been demolished since then.

any information would be most appreciated.

Hi there

Here's a map of the local area from my 1948 street atlas.

Kate Street is located in Box B, off Dendy Street near the railway line. Larch Road is in Box H near the top.

I literally can't see Kate Street on my modern street map - the location is obscured by some text!

Larch Road appears to have been truncated and is now Larch Close.

Cheers
Dave

Kate Street has now been built over by the school, which expanded.

This picture may be of interest, I obtained it at least 3rd hand, but it is supposed to be a picture of all the children living in Larch Road in 1922.

Hi berrys66

Having trouble downloading your picture of all the children living in Larch Road, really interested as my father was about 4 years old and living in Larch Road at the time, what is your link with Larch Road?

Cheers
