Crewe Butchers Shops
« on: Friday 29 June 07 11:30 BST (UK) »
Has anyone access to trade directories for the period 1903-1906 ?
We know my grandfather opened a Butcher's shop there during that period because one of my Dad's younger brothers was born in Crewe but we know nothing more  :(.

There is Kelly's Directory of Cheshire, 1896, Kelly's Directory of Cheshire, 1902 and Kelly's Directory of Cheshire, 1914

crewe is always in the Cheshire directories because it's in Cheshire ;D did you go through the pages it takes time unless you have a fast computer ;D.They are in alphabetical order so crewe comes after Chester. Just checked both above books. Crew starts on page 269 of the 1902 book, cant remember the image number. You might find someone you know even it isn't the butcher ;D

In the 1902 Directory the Crewe commercial section starts on page 275, which is image 289.

Thanks Stan ;D                                                                             I just started at 269 in case he didn't have the shop at that time, but may have been living in crewe. So he would/might come under residents.

sorry folks - had a senior moment - I only looked at page one  :-[
I'll look in the 1902 one but I know they were'nt there in 1914 because the 2 youngest like the 2 eldest were born in Broadbottom.

Hi everyone,
As I thought he was still in Broadbottom in 1902 and nowhere in Cheshire in 1914.
However I did find his father who was Chairman of Tintwistle RDC in 1902 - which I knew but it's always nice to see in print.
How often was Kelly's Directory published ?  Is there one between 1902 and 1914 for Cheshire ? even if it's not on line.
Thanks everyone for your help
