1871 Census & Birth - Price
« on: Thursday 09 December 04 19:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm looking for some help tracking down an ellusive individual.  I thought it would be a rather easy task due to her unusual first name, bur after trying both Ancestry and FreeBMD I've drawn a blank.

This is what I know so far:

Her name is ESSIE PRICE and from later census returns following her marriage, her place of birth is always listed as 'Durham'.

She was born in approx 1857, which would make her about 24 in the 1871 census.

I'm pretty confident that ESSIE isn't a shortened form of another name, as this is what has been listed on her Marriage & Death records.

So if anyone can turn something up, I would be very grateful.

Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard

Is that born about 1857 or 24 in 1871 - 10 yrs difference!

Who did Essie marry, where and when?

Regards

Sorry about that - my mistake.

Essie was 24 on the 1881 Census, born in approx 1857.  She married a John Dickaty in 1876 - registration district Dover, however she spent her married life in the Hampshire area.

Thanks
Richard

Hi,

I checked 1837online from Jan 1855 to June 1858.  There was no Essie listed.  No variations which could have been a shortened form either.  Could this have been a middle name which she took as her first name?

Hi Richard

The BMD's for Durham can be searched on the Durham County Council website.

http://www.durham.gov.uk/gro/newgro.nsf/search?open&C0329167091209122004$

If you just put the Surname in the searchbox only 40 entries appear (20 female) during years 1851-1860.

Like 1837online there is no Essie Price.  There is an Elizabeth born 1858 - might be worth enquiring about.  If you quote Essie's father's name you will not be charged at the local Register Office if that doesn't match.

Hi Richard

There is a reference on an Internet site of Essie being used as short for Esther.
