Hi Ian

This looks to be the family in 1871:

Andrew Johnstone    44, shoemaker, b. Dumfries
Margaret Johnstone    36, b. Linthigow
Arthur F Johnstone    17, shoemaker, b. England
Margaret Johnstone    10, b. b. Linlithgow

Address: 310 High Street, Linlithgow

Struggling to find the family in 1881 (Andrew and Margaret/Arthur and Agnes) at the moment and Ancestry has just gone down for routine maintenance. I'll try again later unless someone can find them in the meantime.

Regards.

Monica

Hi Monica

Thanks for finding the info for me, on the info you found, you have found a Margaret Johnstone born Linlithgow aged 10 which i did not know about, could you look in the 1861 cencus to see any of thier siblings are there, how much info is on the cencus return?  Sorry to keep asking you to look for me.

Many Thanks Ian jp

I'm struggling on the censuses at the moment (I'll keep going!). Found a possibility for Andrew's parents.

From IGI we have the following children showing for Andrew and Margaret Hair following their marriage in 1846:

1. JANE FRASER JOHNSTONE Christening: 30 JUN 1849 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
2. HELEN JOHNSTONE Christening: 18 MAY 1847 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
3. MARTHA TRAINER JOHNSTONE  Christening: 30 OCT 1851 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
4. MARGARET HAIR JOHNSTON  Birth: 10 JAN 1856 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland

It would look like Arthur b.1854 in England was probably their first born son and as such Arthur could well be the name of Andrew's father.

There is a submitted entry on IGI for the birth of an Andrew:

Andrew Johnstone  Christening:  08 NOV 1825   Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
Parents: Arthur Johnstone and Jane Fraser

Mother's name above could link up with child NO.1

There is also an actual extract on IGI for this marriage below, which could mean that Arthur Snr. may have remarried. Name of second wife could also connect with child No.3 above:

ARTHUR JOHNSTONE Marriages: MARTHA TRAINER
Marriage: 06 JUN 1834  Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland

There is an 1851 Census entry for Arthur and Martha, and Arthur's occupation also connects with Andrew's:

Arthur Johnstone 52, Master Shoemaker Employs 1 Man, b. Dumfries
Martha Johnston 38
Elizabeth Johnston 13
Arthur Johnston 11
Charles Johnston 8
John Johnston    6
Cath Mary Johnston 2

Address: Kirkgate, Dumfries

I'll try and find Andrew's entry in 1841.

Monica  :)

just googled IGI found its the  LDS site. That is were i found arthur's siblings from, but was not sure because of the middle names but now you say that he could have had a second marrige it does make sence. the first reply you sent had a Margaret Johnston aged 10, but in the the IGI you just sent it says MARGARET HAIR JOHNSTON  Birth: 10 JAN 1856, there is a four year diffrence could be just a mistake or just badley written in the origanal?

Sorry Ian been off for a while and just back.

I would imagen that the first Margaret died and a second daughter, Margaret who shows in 1871 was born and given the same name. Quite common to reuse names of children if the first child died. I cannot however see a death in Scotland for a Margaret b. 1856 who died before 1871 whose mother's maiden name was Hair.

Mistakes can creep in with the transcriptions on the census indexes. You would have to look at the original image for the 1871 census on the pay to view site Scotlands People to see if there are any errors. I have though checked on Scotlands People on the search index and there is a Margaret Johnstone age 10 in Linlithgow which might relate to the index entry I posted earlier.

Where did your Arthur b. 1854 end up after his marriage in Linlithgow in 1875?

Well thay moved to London some time between 1888-1891 as thay are in the 1891 and 1901 Cencus, had at least 7 children one of which James Lepper Johnston ( see Picture ) married a Italian lady Angela Maria Kathrina Mazzoni (see picture) who had my mum who then had me.
