1891 census Richard Washington Stumbles
« on: Friday 29 June 07 22:35 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for Richard Washington Stumbles who was married to Amy Louise (nee Kemball).

I believe he was in the Bristol area in 1891.  He was born in 1862 in East Stonehouse, Devon.  Amy was born in 1861 in Clifton.

Thanks,

Claire

Hi MaryA,

Thanks for that.  I knew they had moved up to Lancashire but didn't know when.  As they married in 1889 in Bristol, I assumed that they would still be there 2 years later.  Thanks for the earlier census too. It fills in a bit more of the gap!!

Claire

As you obviously didn't have earlier census records I thought I'd take a look, but they are eluding me at present in 1861

I found the marriage - wonderful name
Richard Mole Crocker Stumbles Sept qtr 1859 presumably to Maria Louisa Dyer in East Stonehouse, 5b 495.

So as the name is fairly unique I discovered the family in 1851
13 Hobart Cottages, East Stonehouse, Devon
Abram Stumbles Head M 54 Sculptor Dodbrooke Devon
Mary B wife M 57 Nevis West Indies
Thos M son Un 18 Clerk (Office) Charlottetown P Islands
Rich. M C Son Un 13 Scholar East Stonehouse Devon
HO107; Piece: 1880; Folio: 319; Page: 28

and in 1841
East Stonehouse, Devon
Abraham Stumbles 40 Grocer Y
Mary 45 F
John 15 Y
Robert 15 Y
James 13 Y
Thomas 9 F
Richard 4 Y
/Sarah Haladay 15 F
Martha Haladay 14 F
Joseph Viviani 15 F
HO107; Piece 276; Folio: 24; Page: 43

The Y meaning "Born in County" F means "Foreign Parts".

Took another look for 1861 - the Richard MC does it, only one of them in the country! surname transcribed as Stundles.  The transcribers have had great fun with this surname over the years.

I think Abraham must have been a widow in 1861 as there's a death entry for Mary Blackmore Stumbles, Sept Qtr 1857 East Stonehouse 5b 1_7 and the death of Abraham Dec Qtr 1866 East Stonehouse 5b 222 age about 70.

Hi

The information I have for Richard Washington Stumbles can be seen at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/huang.walker/GENEALOGY/INDIVIDUAL/HTML/I854-Stumbles.html. You can find many other Stumbles through this link, including Abraham Stumbles (senior), the great-grandfather of Richard Washington Stumbles (this Abraham was also my ggggg-grandfather. I'd be interested in any information you have relating to the Stumbles family.

Regards
David

Thanks to Mary A for all the info and for spending the time on this. It has helped to fill in a quite few blanks.  Much appreciated.

David - Richard Washington Stumbles was my great grandfather. We have some other bits of info on Stumbles and will try to get this to you in the next few days when my wife (who is my main researcher) has a bit more time!  Thanks for sharing your website with us - we'll take some time to look at it in the next few days.

Thanks again,

Jon & Claire
