1891 census lookup
« on: Saturday 30 June 07 11:46 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have Matthew LEGG b. 1873 North Shields on the 1881 census (North Shields) and then the 1901 Census (Aberdeen).

I can't seem to find him on the 1891 census anywhere.

It's possible he was either a fisherman (1901 census) or a merchant seaman (Marriage, Scotland, 1899).

If anyone can help with ideas on where to look next, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Trini.

Hi Trini

I haven't been able to find him either. His siblings appear to be in the Tynemouth Union Workhouse - John George 15, Elizabeth 12 & a Peter 8. I cannot see the parents either. It is possible that Matthew, being 18, could have been at sea.

Thanks Trish,

That's what I was thinking.  Yes, the rest of the kids from the family were in the workhouse.

Dad was living with his sister and their family.  Mum was elsewhere (can't remember offhand).  The parents later married other people (without a divorce as far as I can see!!!)

Would he have shown up if his vessel was in port anywhere?

Thanks again,

Trini.

If he was in the Navy & in port he would be listed (I think the Navy also listed when not in port - but I could be wrong)

I have no idea re the merchant Navy - sorry

Hi Trini, just come across your post 're;Matthew Legg.

Unfortunately I don't have any further info on him, but he is also my great uncle ! His brother Peter 1882-1963 was my great grandfather . I was just wondering if you are related to me, and if so who are your parents. Regards Sue Fisher (nee Legg)
