Can I have a date?
« on: Sunday 01 July 07 17:05 BST (UK) »
Here is another one of my antique shop finds......I would like to return this photo to a family member...if I can find one.....

But...first I need a date...and a name!

On the front of the photo it has a photographer's name and address

PAULINE THOMLE - MELROSE ST.

I think this might be Melrose in Los Angeles but haven't checked yet.

The big problem is trying to read what is written on the back....anybody have any clue?

Hiya kid,

There are two date lines that come to mind when I look at this study the first is that it was taken prior to the the kick up coming into fashion in 1889 and the second is that it could be taken after the Leg of Mutton style of sleeving had finished and disappeared. The date for this happening was 1897 and I feel more sure that that is when this photograph was taken (after 1897 that is). I would therefore place a date line of between 1897 and 1906. As for the writing on the reverse ............sorry can not help you there. Are you sure it says Melrose as it looks more like Merlose to me (but then again I have bad eyesight anyway).

Oh....Rowley,

You are right......of course it says MERLOSE.....I didn't realize that I have become dyslexic in me old age!...LOL

Well....that makes sense because I think that Tholme is a Danish name....so...I think this picture may have been taken in Scandinavia.....

Wow.....great work.

On the back it says Merry Christmas, Sofie. Gladelig Jul is Danish for Merry (or Happy) Christmas, with a little bit of spelling variation. I don't think it's either Swedish or Norwegian because both of those are God Jul, Good Christmas.

Hey, Team RC is hot! ;D

I've been fooling around with the Merlose St, and I think the "St" does not stand for street, which is Gade in Danish. But there is a village called Store Merlose, or Great Merlose, pretty well dead center on Zealand island, which is the same island Copenhagen is on.

Just a possibility.

Oh my gosh....China!

I am laughing so hard........

I have been putting Gludelig Yiul - Gludilig Yuel - Gleudelug Yul etc etc etc into Ancestry for the past month or so....LOL....now I know why my searches didn't go anywhere!.....There is no one in the USA named Happy Christmas!

How funny........

And how clever of you to know the language...well done.

Well....doesn't look like I will find that family......Sofie could be anyone!

BUT.....maybe we can find a rellie of Pauline Thomle, the photographer, who might like the pic for their family tree stuff!

Indi, that's funny! But you've gotten your money's worth out of Ancestry, anyway ;D

I have a few pics like that, too, just signed with a first name on the back...how frustrating. Total lack of foresight on the part of the autographer :P
