« on: Monday 02 July 07 21:35 BST (UK) »
Hi all  :)

Is there anyone that can look at the 1851 census for the Dowlais area of Merthyr Tydfil please?

I am looking for a record of an Edward Sutton, he would be approx 2 years old, would like to know details of his parents and any brother and sisters? Address would be great if at all possible?

Would be gratefl for any help possible, Thanks!

Hi kevd

1851 census Wales - HO107/2459/224/23
Dowlais, Merthy Tidfil

Tram Road Side
David Sutton head 30 Miner b (looks like) Wethecwm, Somersetshire
Martha wife 29 b Longshipen
Edward son 2 b Dowlais, Glamorganshire
Sarah dau 4 months ditto

am taking another look at Martha's pob...can't make out the County ???

Suey

Added OK Martha's pob is indexed as Longshipen Pembrokeshire which looks correct.
Had a look at the map index and am wondering if David's pob should be Withycombe, Somerset...

Hope this helps.......

Lol osprey...two heads/four eyes are better than one - I seem to be picking the hard to read images just lately, either that or I need new specs   ::)

I took off my specs and that didn't help! 1861 pob for Martha looks like Llansteffer but neither place appears in the place name index I use.

Hi Suey & Osprey

Thanks very much for looking at that.

Sorry it was a difficult one to translate  :) could the pob for Martha be Landshipping, Pembrokeshire rather than Longshippen?

As there is an enumerator's mark across the start of the word on the 1851, it could be. An enumerator a couple of counties away who didn't know the place name could be creative, but the 1861 does look like Llansteffer or similar. Again, an enumerator unfamiliar with the name....
