Hi Alison
This is from the 1851 census index for Kingscliffe:
(all one household)
John Nicholls, 40, born Kingscliffe
Mary Nicholls, 38, born Kingscliffe
Henry Nicholls, 16, born Kingscliffe
John Nicholls, 6, born Kingscliffe
Alfred Nicholls, 3, born Kingscliffe
Emma Nicholls, 11 mth, born Kingscliffe
There was also a Lui (Louis?) son of John & Mary Nicholls baptised at KC 24 March 1854.
Alfred was baptised there 1 August 1847.
John's occupation was shoemaker
I also found their marriage at Kingscliffe:
John Nicholls, bachelor, otp, married Mary Sharpe, otp, spinster, on 30 July 1832.
Unfortunately as it is before 1837 the father's name is not given but the witnesses were Wm Nicholls and Charles Whyman so this could be a clue.
(I have frequently found one of the parents being a witness at the child's wedding and assuming that the age on the census was correct the John son of John & Elizabeth would have been 41 at least)
All signed their names except Mary Sharpe.
I know this is not conclusive proof but I think perhaps a reasonable assumption could be made?

Happy Christmas
