Where would I look to check on a possible will for someone who died in Chewton Mendip in 1835?

Sadly, most pre-1858 Somerset wills were destroyed in WW2.  See this link for information as to surviving records:

Do check the Estate Duty wills which cover the period you are interested in.  If your person is listed there (or any likely relatives in Somerset parishes) Somerset Record Office has them all on film - very easy to use.  You can also get printed copies from the films.
