Lost family after 1861
« on: Saturday 14 July 07 09:14 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I’ve been tracing Anthony McCALL b. 27 Mar 1829 Straiton, via Ancestry and have him up to the 1861 census living at High St in Ayr.

He is listed as Antony (sic) 32, with his wife Marian 27, and children Janet Durvan 7, Thomas 5, & Marean (sic) 11 mo.

I have been unable to find any of the family in Scotland or England in 1871.

Any help in trying to find this family or out-think the Ancestry transcriptions would be gratefully received.

Bren.

Have you looked for any emigration? The only possibility I found from a quick look in Eastern Australia is a Marion McCall aged 18, arriving 1878

Hi Trish

That certainly looks a good possiblility and worth following.
If it's not her, it's more than likely a cousin - they were very prolific and strictly adhered to the Scottish naming convention which makes life interesting.

Hi Monica
I hadn't thought to check the IGI as I have had very little success with it lately and got out of the habit of checking.

A fresh pair of eyes (or two) works wonders.
Thank you both.

But where did they go after 1868....?

Bren

Hi Monica

Thanks for looking - I hadn't been able to find them in England either.

A whole family can't just disappear.....  where are they?

If you follow Marion in the NSW BDMs there seems to be a marriage & possible death - but no children

Marriage 2804/1886 POWER FRANCIS MCCALL MARION GLEBE
Death 11318/1893 POWER MARION UNKNOWN SANSON MARION ORANGE

Not sure if the death is the same person - or your person. (Whether Sanson is a given or surname is unknown) The marriage should give parent names (but not guaranteed at this time in NSW)

Hi Trish

Just been re-checking the tree to get a handle on what relation she was to my grt-grandfather who was in Bute for the 1881 census but was married in Sydney in 1890 - in Glebe!!!  I have not been able to find when he arrived.
They would have been first cousins.

Their grandparents had 14 children and they in turn had at least 6-12 children, so gets a bit confusing when they all use the same names and quite a few of the men seemed to mary a Marian/Marion.

So, that marriage looks a good possibility, but the name for father on the death cert doesn't add up - certainly not one I have come across in any of the branches.

One to add to the order list for when I am feeling a bit "flush".

Many thanks.

Bren.

A comment I well understand - I have so much more information on my relatives who stayed at home in Scotland - because of the cost of Certs and transcriptions in Australia and the much cheaper cost in Scotland. I tend to only buy certificates here for direct ancestors or those with lots of children, usually confirming much information.
