LANCASTERS of Leighton Buzzard COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 14 July 07 14:18 BST (UK) »
Is anyone else looking into the family of Levi Lancaster (son of Robert), born abt 1829 in Leighton Buzzard, died 1908 in Aylesbury, married Hannah in 1847?  Family of straw plaiters and then shoe menders. His grandson Christopher (who had twelve children) was my Grandfather and I have a lot of info to share!

Also - Levi's address in the 1871 census (thank you John!!) is Lower America - does this road (?) still exist? Where did the name come from?

Many thanks!

This looks like Hannah in 1841.
This cencus does not give relationships to head of house only ages and the are sometimes rounded up and down by 5 years.
It also does not give places of birth only whether or nor a person was born in county

   Hi Tilly....

Little America or America Row is now long gone. My nan though in the 1970's still used the name America. The area was between what is now Garden Hedge and St Andrews St. I have two elderly aunts who live opposite where it used to be.Up until the 1920's it was an unmade sandy lane on the edge of town. After the second world war council houses were built the length of the road.

Hello Tazzie - very interesting - thank you! The Lancasters were shoe menders and had a shop in Egginton - I wondered whether this meant anything to your Aunts?  Another address is Mill Road, Leighton Buzzard....
Thanks again.

   Hi Tilly....

Mill Road is another place quite near to the area know as America.
It is still there but again nearly all the housing has changed in the years.
Eggington is a small village just outside Leighton Buzzard famous for being where Bob Monkhouse lived for many years. Here old and new alike can be found in the village with many old thatched cottages still around.
The name Lancaster finds a David Lancaster in Eggington in 1864 running the Three horse shoes and being a plait dealer.  In 1891 there is Frederick in ST Andrews St a shop keeper. This would put him close to the area of America.

My parents still live in Leighton Buzzard and I was born there, so if you have areas of info that you would like to know more about just shout.

As I forgot before ....Welcome to Rootschat ;D
