Henry Charles Bowen around 1901
« on: Saturday 14 July 07 19:36 BST (UK) »
Not being well up on Military matters I wonder if anyone can help find Henry Charles Bowen/Bowins/Bowens who doesn't appear to be on the 1901 census so possibly is in the forces abroad at that time.  He was born 1880ish.  I'm not clear what military records would be available on line for the 1901 period.  His father was Charles Edward and he may have come from Maidstone although family tales have him down as Welsh. Any pointers much appreciated.

Many soldiers were in South Africa in 1901 - the second Boer War. They were not counted in the census as, of course, they were not resident in England on that day.

You may find him on this splendid record:

Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.
Any census information included in this post is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

many thanks for your replies
I was aware of the Maidstone family (Spelt Bowin) and everything fits for them but an elderly Aunt is sure they were a Welsh mining family which the Maidstone people aren't.  I've probably got to be patient and wait for the 1911 census to confirm which is right.

Michael Asplin site is a wonderful resource - unfortunately no Henry Bowen there.  But I'm going to take a closer look for others on the tree who have gone missing.

Thanks again
Sonia
