CHARLES LANCASTER of Bedfordshire - COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 15 July 07 10:58 BST (UK) »
Help please!  I can find Charles Lancaster (son of Levi, husband of Elizabeth, father of Christopher) born abt 1847 in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire in the censuses up to and including 1881. Cannot find him, or his wife, in the 1891 or 1901. Have tried various spellings of the surname, but no luck! Many thanks for any help. ???

The 1891 Census RG12 Piece 37 Folio 126 Page 65

shows a Christophe Lancaster born 1879 in Lylebuggon Bedfordshire, a visitor to a family of Bartholomaus Harris and family in Hammersmith, London.

I would speculate that Lylebuggon is in fact Leighton Buzzard where your Christopher was born in 1879.

Hello Alan and Slaw

I think the Charles who died in 1887 could well be "my" Lancaster! - The age fits, and although I have his name as Charles Obiah (on his son christopher's birth certificate - my grandfather), I know the names get changed.

I have Christopher and Levi in all the censuses - but thank you very much for your time!

I wonder where Elizabeth is?!  Maybe living with her daughter Lily - I will have a look.

Many thanks again for your help.

Hi Tilly

I would be very careful trying to find a LILY Lancaster. I have been unable to trace a birth for 1880/81 of that name however there was a birth recorded in Leighton Buzzard in March Quarter of 1881 of a ROSE LILIAN Lancaster.

In the 1891 census a Rose Lanacaster, Niece, is living at Church Street, Leighton Buzzard with her uncle LEVI :-

Hello Alan
You're right about Lily - I have found her as Rose Lily or Lilian, who was a Ladies Maid in the 1901 census. I have found a Rose Lilian who married in 1907, but two possible husbands........... If the father died, this would explain why Rose and Christopher (my Grandfather) both left Leighton Buzzard and started working. However, I cannot find Elizabeth, the mother - she isn't with her daughter  - she was originally Elizabeth Johnson, and had a son Harry. Have spent ages trying to find her, or the son, but only have them in the 1881 census - Elizabeth and Charles was obviously a second marriage.  Any ideas? Maybe she died too, although I can't find her death either, or any remarriage..................
Also, how do I go about finding information before 1841? As I live in Brittany, I can only find things via Internet?
Thank you again for all your help and your time.

Hi Hilary

I too linked Elizabeth and her son, Harry, who I presume was born out of wedlock, as the Johnson Family from Deanshanger in Northamptonshire.

I too have so far been unable to trace Elizabeth after 1881.

From checking the births it is possible she was registered as Elizabeth Sarah Ann Johnson, so it is conceivable she is using an abbreviation of Elizabeth or one of her other 'given' names.

I'll keep looking for as long as possible as I am sure will others.

As far as checking pre 1841 just post on RootsChat exactly what you are looking for, its suprising what information the folks on here can find.
