Joseph Wicks Or Wheeler
« on: Tuesday 17 July 07 12:08 BST (UK) »
I first came across a Joseph J W Wicks when I was looking for a possible Marriage for one of my Stephens relatives,an Elizabeth Stephens born in Cefn Mawr Denbighshire in 1864.The Marriage is listed on Free BMD and North Wales BMD in 1885  in the Wrexham District of Denbighshire.I then looked for an Entry for the Couple in the 1891 Census, and found them in Chester Cheshire, living with Fred Stephens and Richard Stephens, both brothers of Elizabeth.Joseph is given as a Carpenter/Joiner,and listed as born in Chelsea Middlesex in c 1854.I then looked for an Entry for the Couple in the 1901 Censys, and after some searching found a Joseph J Wheeler,Carpenter/Joiner given as born in Chelsea Middlesex in c 1856,living in Lewisham London with his Wife Elizabeth, given as born in "Wales Denbigh" in c 1864.Also living with the couple are Fred "Stevens"  and Maria "Stevens",who I immediately recognise as brother and sister of Elizabeth. There is also a daughter of the couple,a Violet A Wheeler given as born in "Wales Denbigh" in c 1895. I would think that there is no doubt that they are the same people as in 1891,but why should Joseph change his Surname from Wicks to Wheeler?

Many thanks for your reply, but quite frankly,if I really knew the answer to that question, there would be little point in posting the Topic!?

Yes thanks Pauline, the Marriage is listed on North Wales BMD between an Elizabeth Ann Edwards Stephens, and a Joseph John Wheeler Wicks.Yes it is quite curious that she should include her Mothers maiden name the Ann Edwards, why Joseph is called Wicks in 1891,and earlier years, and why he should use teh name Wheeler in 1901 is another matter. There is also the daughter Violet A,I am wondering what Surname I should be searching for her under,or listing her in my Tree?
