After a conversation today with my mother regarding her grandfather MICHAEL RYAN she seems to think her grandfather was a club steward at the MECHANICS INSTITUTE in Galway. She has always remembered a snooker Hall when she visited as a child in the 1930/1940s. Does anyone know of this place, does it still exist, would it be possible to find out about past club stewards? On my grandparents marriage certificate it says Michael was a club steward, they married in 1929 so presumably it was before and after this date.

The Institute still exists. Unfortunately their website is still under construction so you'll need to write to the Secretary of Galway Mechanics Institute, Middle Street, Galway City, Co. Galway. Just to let everyone know that I have received an e-mail from The Executive secretary of the Mechanics Institute and the gentleman is very kindly going to find information on my Grt Grandfathers family. There is even a photo of him, the members, and his family that he will send to me.

hello jaq.new to the site.micheal ryan was my great grandfather.his son patrick joseph ryan was my grandad.my grandad moved to barnsley yorkshire during the war,so there are ryans in barnsley and also in sheffield,and a whole lot of them in galway who we keep in touch with and visit.

mechanics institute means a lot to us too my dad patrick joseph ryan was born there and michael ryan was my grandfather  i live in devon but most of my family live in barnsley yorkshire i do recall family in manchester i know kathleen rormely ryan is now in australia and rose and violet we used to visit in manchester mayber they are the same ones ur related to
