Sark marriage circa 1864 please can anyone look up
« on: Friday 20 July 07 20:38 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Yet another brick wall  ::)

Can anyone check the marriage records for Sark. I would estimate between 1863 to 1866.

I have William Eaglen born 1838 in Norfolk.  Missing on 1861 census. He is back in Norfolk complete with wife and child on 1871 census.  His wife is
Mary Hammond b. Jan 1847 Sark, C.I.

By 1871 they have a daughter b. 1866 in Norfolk.  As I cannot trace their marriage on UKBMD I have a strong suspicion he went over to Sark, found a girl, got married and returned home.

Williams father was James Eaglen - Shoemaker.

Can anyone help or tell me how I get to view the Sark Marriage records

Thanks, Joan

Hi,

The Sark marriage records are available for viewing at the Priaulx library in Guernsey.

William Eaglen and Mary Hamon (not Hammond) were married in Sark on Dec 11, 1864.  Mary is the daughter of Jean Hamon and Marie LeFeuvre, both from old Sark families.

Joan, Glad I could help, I just discovered Rootschat yesterday and wasn't sure if you were still on the list.

By any chance do you have the date of Mary Hamon's death?

Dulce

Hi Dulce,

Yes.  17th February 1904 in Denton, Manchester, Lancashire.

This family is only related to me by marriage.  The Eaglen's were the ancestors of my aunt's husband.  He asked if I could do his tree after seeing the one I did for mine (and my aunt's) side.

They had a family bible with Mary & William's children's births listed in it.  One or two of the children were a year or so out, so I suspect it was written  later on, possibly even when either Mary or William died.

Odd her name was shown as Mary HAMMOND in it.  But if it was written later, with a Lancashire accent Hamon and Hammond sound exactly the same.

Thanks once again
Joan

Joan, Thank you for the information on Mary's death.

I had the information about their marriage because of a research project in the Channel Islands, not because of a genealogy interest, so learning what happened to Mary after she disappeared from the Channel Island records closes the book on her for me.

Re: the pronounciation of Hamon - although I'm not sure what a Lanchashire accent sounds like, I've seen Hamon transcribed as Hammond before when written by English speaking people, such as census takers, but the name is definitely spelled Hamon in the Channel Islands and has been at least back to the 1500s.  I think of it as being pronounced as Hah-moan rather than Ham-an, but it's been a while since I've been in the Channel Islands so I can't swear to its pronounciation.

Hi Dulce

Glad to be of service  ;D

That's a first for me, when both parties get an answer from one question  ;D
