Wotton Under Edge parish registers - Powell
« on: Saturday 21 July 07 04:15 BST (UK) »
Hello!
I'm looking for an Eliza Powell, born approx 1824 in Wotton Under Edge. Does anyone have access to these parish registers and could perhaps help me break down this brick wall?
Regards
Sammi
Most of my ancestry is from the Midlands area of England. I was born in Birmingham, but a lot of my ancestors are from the Black Country. So I am a Brummy but also a Black Country wench (hence the Yahoo nickname!)

According to a submitted entry in the IGI you have been told about, Elizabeth P's father is actually given as Horatio Nelson Powell (HNP). and in
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm#PageTitle
at Berkeley you will find extracted data concerning a marriage of HNP to Susanna Jenner in Nov. 1826 and according to my records they were married by licence with the consent of Jane Powell, mother of Horatio by the curate of Hill - Geo(?) Jenner.  Each of them signed their name.

"With consent of somebody" usually means that the person was under 21.  In this case, as Horatio's mother gave consent, it may mean she was a widow or Horatio was base born.

Regards

Chas

P.S. Use the Hugh Wallis site to look for Horatio's baptism at Uley.

PPS HNP's death registration can be found in freebmd.

Sammi

You will find more information about the Powell family in the topic

Gloucester Burial Index c1830-38 for William Powell

on this board.

Horatio Nelson Powell was born c 1801 and married Susan/Susannah Jenner in Berkeley in 1826.  It seems likely that the 7 months old child also named Horatio Nelson Powell who died in Chipping Sodbury in 1833 was his son.  There is a death recorded in Stroud reg district in Dec qtr 1874 for a 73 year old Horatio Nelson Powell.

This post is a long time ago, but for the record I will add some information. I am researching a Horatio Nelson Powell, and this man was born in Abergavenny and bpt in 1806. His parents were Jane (nee Price) and John Powell. (see https://www.freereg.org.uk/)

John Powell was well-to-do, a RN surgeon and solicitor (so described in daughter's obit); Welsh Horatio was privileged and described as 'Esq' in newspapers.

Welsh Horatio became a well known steeplechase rider, as well as a sometime solicitor. (newspaper articles). He moved to Australia in late 1850s, early 60s. He died in Echuca, Victoria, Australia in 1869. A newspaper article describes "I see that Mr. Horatio Nelson Powell is dead; he was one of the most celebrated steeplechase riders in the old country in his day. He lived for many years near Hamilton, but had lately gone to reside at Echuca, and was present at the late V.R.C meeting. Some internal injury from falling out of his buggy was the cause of his death."

His death registry index (no 8994/1869 from BDM Victoria) states his wife on the certificate is 'Susan Jenner' - although his probate states another woman, seemingly a common-law, is his current wife. Additionally my Horatio is from 'Wales', aged 63 (matches my 1806 bpt) and father's name is John.

So I don't think the Horatio Nelson Powell in this original post married Susan Jenner....?
