Do you want the image of the census page, Parky or the hotel?

The census image can be obtained from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It's pay to view but very cheap. This image would cost £1.20 to search the index, view and download. Otherwise, the Ewart Library, Dumfries, The Dumfries & Galloway FHS, Dumfries or your local LDS Family History Centre would have the film.

Hi there, Gadget and Parky

I am wondering if you have confused parky.

Parky, The family aren't at the hotel. The census records sometimes show two lists, side by side.  The hotel is on the left side. Then one would go down the street and your family is listed on the right of the page.

The family aren't living at the hotel.

The reference to the Kings Arms was referring to you thinking it was the Kings Ainer.

The name of the hotel is King's Arms. It isn't where your family was living.

Is that correct, Gadget?

Yes

They are a completely separate household on a different page. I don't think I have confused him Jamjar. I think he is quite clear.

Hi Parky

I've just looked at the census image and they don't seem to be at any hotel. They are a separate household living in the village of ?Bottach, Dunscore.

The hotel is on the previous page and 4 households away. It might be a possible transcription error but they are definitely not at the hotel.

Where did you get the original information from?

That's good then, Gadget. I thought Parky was wanting a picture of the hotel. Maybe it is me who is confused.  ::)

The Ewart doesn't have the '61 census. You have to make an appointment with the Archive centre.

Meanwhile, I think this is the Millar family on the '51 census. Living at Clairston in the Glencairn parish. All were born in Dunscore, except the wife.

William Millar age 53 and an agricultural labourer.

Margaret Brown age 39 the wife of William Millar
born in Kilmarnock Ayrshire

Cathrine  10 months
Alexander  5
Jannet       7
Jane          9
Margaret 11
George    13

It confused me for a minute which was why I asked him.

I think he was referring to a picture of the census page.

Another of Ancestry's transcription errors seem to be the root cause of the problem  :(

hi gadget and jamjar,
thankyou again for helping me with the mix up over where my rellies were living at in 1861 during the census. i must admit i was a little confused but now i am very clear.i have used scotlands people before but didnt have a lot of info to search at the time so will invest in some more credits and look for the record.
best wishes to both of you ;)
