Gainslow Mill Berwick

I am looking for information regarding the above Mill.  John Clay and Son are listed in the 1750-1849 Directory for berwick.

Gainslaw is a farm/hamlet  a few miles west of Berwick within Northumberland. On the current OS map New Mills is marked about 1/2 mile north on the River Whiteadder. Hope this is some help.

I have just seen your post for Gainslaw Mill, Berwick on Tweed - were John Clay and Son tenants of the Mill.

I so hope this is the brick wall I have been unable to get past in 20 years.... The last name is Clazy although over the years, we have found it spelled hundreds of different ways!  John had two sons....James and John and wife Isabel, Isabella, Oswald.  Would not surprise me that the last name you found is clay at all.  Please let me know.....thank you so very much.

  In his book "Goodwife Hot:Northumberland's Past in its Place Names",
Godfrey Watson has it that the placename Gainslaw is derived from
 "Gagni's ( a Scandanavian) hill"
