Henry Oscar Gates is "a man of mystery" ... no names of his parents or place of birth are cited anywhere that I've come across yet.

Their marriage certificate shed no light on the matter either.

Would his death certificate? Was more information provided in the early 1900s on death certificates compared to the later part of the 1800s?

I guess it is quite possible he had a brother settle in SA as well.

Did Henry Oscar Gates die in SA or Victoria?

Right - now this is interesting - Henry Jnr was possibly born at Yankalilla c1852.

In Bisa there is an entry for a Gates family with Edward Wm GATES, father given as Jas and born about 1835 in ENG/SCT.

He died in 1884 at Balaclava and arrived around 1844.

The first interesting thing is that he was a farmer
at Inman Valley, Yankalilla before moving to Balaclava.

He married at Inman Valley in 1860 Euphemia VEITCH and they had a number of children including Jas Adam GATES who married Jessie Ann SMITH  who had a daughter Elsie May!

Among the other children were a John HENRY and a Lilly.

Now it may be purely coincidental - but it is the first sign of a link!

My eyes need a spell too. I'll probably be online sometime tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Elsie May Gates, daughter of James Adam Gates from Yankallilla, is not the Elsie May on the funeral card. She married....

Elsie May GATES single aged 29 married 23 Jun 1917 Samuel JAMES single aged 35 at Church of Christ Chapel Balaklava  Ref: Gil S 271/854

Fathers were  Abel JAMES & James Adam GATES

That means the Elsie May mentioned on the funeral card must have been
Elsie May GATES born 21 Sep at Adelaide Ref:Ade S 403 /331
Mother being  Edith Jane GATES

More complications.....

Elsie, I have found the link for you between 2 of the names on the funeral card.

Lillian’s father is Ernest Gates, her grandfather George Gates and her great grandfather Richard Gates.
Elsie May’s mother is Edith Jane Gates, her grandfather Charles Gates, and her great grandfather Richard Gates.

Richard is in BISA, born c 1820 Cam Eng died1886 & buried North Brighton. Arrived 1854 on the Joseph Rowen. He was a labourer and then a farmer. Wife was Mary Ann c 1822 died 23 June 1903 and buried Brighton.

A number of their children were listed but not all.

I have found a lot more about this family, including them back in England. Mary Ann was May Ann Arnold. Richard's parents were Thomas Gates and Sarah Swan. But the only sibling I could find for Richard was a sister Frances. By 1841 Richard's mother was living with Richard and his wife and two children.

Among all the names I have collected for this family, there is not a Henry! So where they link to Elizabeth and Henry and Louisa is still waiting to be solved.

Elsie, I have a couple of thoughts - I live on the Fleurieu Peninsula where Yankalilla is. My local library has the original old BMD rgisters, which we are allowed to look at as long as we wear white gloves. Now, I do not know if Yankallilla/Inman Valley births are included - but I can find out, and on my next Library visit, I can have a look for you.

However, I do not know when my next library visit will be. I do not drive, and have to go by a very infrequent bus. But I will check when I go, then send you a PM.

I can also look at microfiche of actual certificates next time I get to the SAGHS library in Unley in the city. But that could be ages away, as I only get there once or twice a year.

Can you think of any link with what I have found? Do you have the funeral card itself - or a copy?
